Ayers Rock: Day 3

Day 3 at Ayers or Uluru was fantastic. We went to the Olgas. The Olgas are the group of smaller rock formations that are about 50k from uluru itself. They are pretty cool. The tallest Olga is taller than ayers rock by 200m, but they are not nearly as impressive as Uluru. We started out the day with an amazing sunrise from right near the Olgas. (Yes we woke up at 5am again!!) It overlooked the Olgas and Ayers Rock. Then we took a hike in and around the Olgas. The trail we followed was called “Valley of the Winds” and now I know why it is named that. Well here are some pics we got.

Ayers Rock: Day 2

Day 2, was our day for, actually going to and climbing, the largest monolith in ‘zed world. We got up before the sun (5:15am to be exact) to watch it hit the rock. Wow, that was cool. There were actually a few moments there where we could see the shadow of the horizon on the rock… that was strange. I have never seen anything like that before. It was really cool. Here is a picture of it…. and once again it only lasted a moment.
Here is the shadow on the rock.

and here is with the full sun hitting it.

This is a little picture of me standing next to ayers rock. As you can see, I am small in this picture… and you still cannot see the top of ayers rock. The rock is actually taller than the Eiffel tower.

So, we decided to climb the rock. and luckily for us it was open on the day we were there. Apparently they close down the climb to the top for any reason: such as high winds, storms, lightening, heat, an aboriginal says so, etc. It is only open about 100 days a year so we were very lucky to climb it. This was actually the only day it was open the whole time we were there! God was good to us!!
I love this little pic of andre’a making here accent to the summit.

Here is the Ayers rock climbing team: Colin, Andrea, Luke, and Keith. We met these guys while climbing the rock and we all got to the top together. It was quite an accomplishment.

Ayers Rock: Day 1

So day 1, mate. We fly from Sydney strait to Ayers rock (uluru) air port. I think a 3.5hr flight that would take 30+hrs in a car. And as it turns out less expensive than the cost of petrol for a car trip. So for the limited time and funds we opted for air. When the plain flew into the airport we got to see the rock from the air. That was a fantastic first view of the rock.

When we landed we took the shuttle bus to our hostel. We checked in, wondered around the resort for a little while and then watched the sunset on top of a big sand dune in the middle of the resort area. That is where we took these pictures. Here is my go at a little landscape photography.

Look, its a big rock!!!

Good news!!! A fully functional blog (with working comments)

Colin says “Last week was a crazy week. That is the understatement of the decade. We get back from Ayers and I see there is an upgrade for my blog so i proceed to upgrade. well, bad idea. Apparently my host is not fully compatible with this update so needless to say, I killed it… all of it. nothing was working for 3 days. After many online chats with my host and a couple of restores from backups it was finally up and ready to role. And yes, I have known that my comments have not been working, but now, some how, they are miraculously working. And you can see my blog posts from before the first page. I hear those are good things to have on a blog.

So I am expecting lots of comments now.

Next, John and I are frantically trying to finish up our videos before we leave. The vids have come out really well and I hope that he will be happy with them. We have put alot of work into these, so I hope everything works out.

Also, we are helping the Norths paint and fix up their house for them to put on the market. So home-life is a bit nuts. One evening John and I stayed up till 4am in the morning installing some flooring. That seems pretty late, but it was totally worth it to have the floor installed and to set up his new 46in flat screen tv in that room. That was a very good feeling. So pretty much John and I work on videos all day and then work on the house all night. I am sure Tommie can relate to that because she just went through that process.

Oh yeah, did i mention that we are trying to get ready to move to New Zealand next week.

Good luck I say to you… I mean myself.”

ayers rock (uluru) #1

Well, we are back in the real world now. We have been in the “heart of australia” for the past 5 days. I (Andre’a) have been wanting to take a trip to Uluru (Ayer’s Rock) since the end of February. Finally, after much hard work, we made it happen. Now, I had heard that Ayer’s Rock was in the middle of nowhere. But let me tell you… we were literally in the middle of nowhere!! There was a tiny airport that looked like it had a dirt runway and a little resort town of 3 hotels. That is it for hours and hours of driving. The nearest city that I know of is Alice Springs that is 6 hours away. Surprisingly, it reminded me a bit of west texas…. The weather was perfect every day!
Anyway, we had a fantastic time. Colin got some AMAZING pictures. and God was totally on our side!

Here is a little sneak peak of what we got!!!

(colin) This is Ayers rock, or as the aboriginals (native people) call it ‘Uluru’. I know what you might be thinking… “it’s just a rock.” We thought that too, but it’s so much more. We hope you will find the beauty in it all through the next few blog we post. The picture was taken right outside of our hotel on top of a little sand dune, sunset the first night. The light was only like this for literally 10 seconds…. it was amazing.

As some of you may know, Tommie Huffman, is a great friend of mine… who just happens to be Andre’a and my wedding photographer. Since we are both amazing photographers who love to stretch our creative muscles, we are going to start doing weekly photography assignments. The topics will be fun, thought provoking, challenging, and good. I think ‘good’ is a good quality to have in a photo assignment. Don’t you? Well that is the preface. Oh yeah, the rules: can’t take up much time. So, there you go.

reflectionweb.jpg

Our first assignment is ‘reflection’. And, it has to be a physical reflection (ex. a mirror). I liked this topic, because we often see reflections, but never pay them much attention. Reflections can be beautiful (like the one I took). Tommie’s reflection has alot of meaning and you should check it out here. It is really an awesome post, I wish I could write like her. I write like I talk. So, the best way to ready my blog posts, is to imagine me talking these words to you…. maybe, I should start writing my whole blog posts in quotation marks. Then it would make more sense.

Well, anyways, I hope you like my pic. I think it is cool and don’t forget to check out Tommies.
